Phase II
Also called: SBIR Phase II, STTR Phase II, development phase, R44 (NIH SBIR), R42 (NIH STTR)
The second SBIR/STTR award stage, which continues the research and development begun in Phase I, funded according to Phase I results, technical merit and commercial potential.
Phase II continues the federal research and development started in Phase I. Funding is based on the results achieved in Phase I and the scientific and technical merit and commercial potential of the proposed Phase II project.
Typically only Phase I awardees can receive a Phase II award. Exceptions include Direct to Phase II awards, cross-program awards (STTR Phase I to SBIR Phase II or the reverse) and cross-agency awards.
A Phase II awardee may receive one additional sequential Phase II award to continue the work. At NIH, the Phase II activity codes are R44 for SBIR and R42 for STTR.
